Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The manuscript submitted is original, all authors know the final version of this and agree to submit it to Gayana
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor)
  • Gayana will have the right to publish the work but the authors still owns the copyright
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format (.docx)
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines
  • In Comments for the Editor, I have suggested at least two potentials reviewers
  • The authors accept to pay the publication fee if the manuscript is accepted

General Information

GAYANA is an open access journal, published by Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Oceanográficas, Universidad de Concepción, Chile.

GAYANA receives the following types of contributions: Original Article, Review, Short Communication, Editorial, Book Commentary and Obituary.

The scope of GAYANA have four main research lines:

  • Earth Sciences: includes but is not limited to studies in Oceanography, Limnology, Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences.
  • Ecology: includes but is not limited to studies in functional ecology, trophic dynamics, and microbial ecology.
  • Environmental Biology: includes studies of environmental pollution in freshwater, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems, and resource management.
  • Biodiversity and Taxonomy: includes but is not limited to Biodiversity, description and species classification.
  • Evolutionary Biology: includes studies like Bioassays and Biotechnology.
  • Applied Biology: includes but is not limited to studies in Population Genetics, Evo-Devo, Evolutionary Ecology and Systematic studies.

Cost of publication

The cost per printed page is US$35 for page. Payment will be requested once the article is accepted for publication. Each author will receive a PDF copy of the article.

Instructions for submitting manuscripts

Manuscripts must be submitted electronically, in order to expedite the review process, it should be upload through our editorial platform (https://gayana.cl), as Word document (.docx) or PDF, in addition to the corresponding figures.

The email gayana@udec.cl can be used only to communicate other matters.

After a first editorial evaluation, manuscripts will be sent for review by two external referees. GAYANA aims at a first decision within 60 days from submission and publication within 9 months after acceptance. Articles are published in order of acceptance.

- Works written in English and Spanish are accepted.

Manuscript format

The manuscript of an original article, review or short communication must be prepared in MS Word, font size 12 (Times New Roman), double spaced. Pages and lines must be numbered.

The title of the manuscript must be in upper and lower case. For manuscripts written in Spanish, the title must appear in Spanish and English. For manuscripts written in English, the title must appear in English and Spanish.

Each author names must be followed by affiliations and email, please mark with a * to corresponding author. If there is more than one author, affiliations are denoted by superscript numbers after each name.

A running title is required for the title page, not exceeding 50 characters (6 to 8 words).

The title of each section is written in capitals and centered (e.g., INTRODUCTION); subtitles or secondary titles in small caps (e.g., Sampling Design) and aligned to the left.

Use italics for scientific names and Latin locutions. Do not include underlined words or tabs the first time that a taxon of species of subspecies level is mentioned, write the whole name including the author

Use units and symbols of the metric system. Points should be used for decimals if the text is written in English or comma (“,”) if the text is written in Spanish.

Genetic Sequences

Protein and DNA sequences must be submitted to Genbank and their access number provided in the manuscript.

Figures and Tables

The figures and tables (with legends) may be inserted within the text at the appropriate positions, or at the end in separate pages after References or Appendix.

The figure and table legends must be written in Spanish and English separating by a slash (. / ) both languages.

They should be concise but self-informative.

Use small caps to distinguish the word Figure and Table at the beginning of the legend.

Tables

Tables are numbered with Arabic numerals, and above have a descriptive legend in English and Spanish.

Tables are designed with the table editor of MS Word. Do no use the space bar or tabs to align values. If needed use the align paragraph function.

Figures

Figures are numbered with Arabic numerals. If needed, refer to figure parts with lower case letters (e.g., Fig. 1a).

Figure lettering should be in a clear, sans-serif typeface (e.g., Helvetica, Arial); using the same font and similar sizes in all the manuscript figures.

Graphics should not be framed.

Use units and symbols of the metric system.

Figures in color should be sent in propped formats (.jpg for pictures and .png for plots and drawings), in separate files and with high resolution, minimum 1600 pixels on the wider side.

File names should include the name of the first author (e.g., Smith_Fig1.jpg).

Citations in the text

Citations in the text must include author name and year without comma (e.g., Mayr 1999). If there are two authors use & (e.g., Vargas & Parra 2005). If there are more than three authors write only the name of the first one followed by et al. (e.g., Vergara et al. 2006). If there is more than one paper by the same author in the same year, use letters to differentiate them (e.g., Gallardo et al. 1998a, 1998b, 1998c). Multiple citations should be listed chronologically (e.g., Vergara et al. 2006; Fernández 1992, 2005; Mayr 1999).

References format

The bibliographic list should include only references cited in the text, alphabetically arranged according the name of the first author.

Use the journal names without abbreviation, also include volume, number, and page numbering. Author names are written in small caps (Small Caps). Citations of meeting abstracts are not acceptable.

* remember, when citing a book, only include the edition if it is NOT the first edition.

Systematic Studies

Systematic studies must be based on specimens housed in recognized collections. Museum numbers must be provided in the manuscript.

Nomenclature must follow the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature 2000.

For the scientific names, author names with initials must be written without spaces between initials and name (e.g., I.M.Johnst).

Specifications for an Original Article

An original article should be structures as follows: TITLE, AUTHOR(S), ABSTRACT (in English and Spanish), KEYWORDS (in English and Spanish), INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, REFERENCES, TABLES and FIGURES. If necessary, an appendix can be included at the end of the manuscript.

The Title has a maximum extension of 20 words.

The Abstract must have a maximum extension of 250 words.

Keywords (max. 5) must be listed alphabetically, trying to minimize the repetition of words that appear in the main title in your listed keywords.

Fusing Results and Discussion into one section is not desirable. If the manuscript needs to be structured in a different format, consult the Editor before submission.

Specifications for a Short Communication

Short communications are articles of a maximum of 2000 words (without including references).

Short communications include TITLE, AUTHOR(S), AFFILIATION(S), SPANISH ABSTRACT (FOR NOTES WRITTEN IN ENGLISH) or ENGLISH ABSTRACT (FOR THOSE WRITTEN IN SPANISH), TEXT, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, and REFERENCES.

The Title has a maximum extension of 20 words.

The Abstract has a maximum extension of 80 words, do not include Keywords.

Acknowledgements (optional) have a maximum of 30 words.

Electronic Reprints

The corresponding author will be sent an electronic version (PDF) of his or her paper published in Gayana. This measure will enable the author to disseminate his or her work through any way.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
